Chief Minister Mr N.D. Tiwari has this month made a brief visit to Wellington, investigating useful earthquake technologies for his earthquake-prone state of Uttaranchal, in northern India.
The Himalayan state of Uttaranchal came into existence in November 2000.
As with all these northern states nestled into the foothills of the
Himalayas, Uttaranchal records high seismic activity. During the
past 200 years Uttaranchal has experienced 116 earthquakes. Out of these,
28 were of sufficient intensity to cause havoc in the region.
Awareness of seismic protection is growing rapidly in India and officials
are very interested in investigating options through this technology.
During his visit Mr Tiwari visited the new Wellington Hospital which is
currently under construction and which incorporates seismic isolation lead
rubber bearings supplied by Robinson Seismic Ltd.
