Robinson Seismic has won a major contract to seismically isolate a new hospital in Shimla, India.
CEO of Robinson Seismic Ltd Mr Alan Wilson is pleased that seismic
isolation is becoming more widely accepted in India as a cost-effective
way to protect lives and structures from the catastrophic effects of
earthquakes.
Robinson Seismic Ltd supplied lead rubber bearings for the first
seismically isolated structure in India - Bhuj Hospital - in 2002.
This hospital was rebuilt following the Gujarat earthquake in 2001
which caused 176 deaths when the original hospital collapsed. Since
then, Robinson Seismic Ltd has spent considerable effort in educating
Indian architects and engineers about the benefits of seismic
isolation.
Shimla is the capital city of the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern
India, in the Himalayan mountains. Like much of India it is
considered to be at high risk of damaging earthquakes.
